World of Infinite Possibilities

HCL Technologies - Infrastructure Services Division (ISD)

Employee first philosophy is what we live by at HCL. Following the tenet that engaged employees lead to engaged customers, HCL launched its Employee First Program to provide a unique and differentiated experience to our employees. In a service economy with more than 60% of workforce belonging to Gen Y it is the competence of the employee that is a critical success factor in value creation. HCL tried to understand what really makes a difference to Gen Y employee and launched several initiatives and programs that are aimed at providing a unique work environment and a work culture which employees take pride in. .

As management expert Gary Hamel points out, to win in the 21st century, tech vendors must behave more like people-centric organizations. The onus is on tech CEOs to transform their hierarchical operating structures into federated networks of entrepreneurial frontline units that can swiftly respond to dynamic market needs worldwide.

Tech execs should bolster such bottom up decision-making processes with Social Computing technologies like innovation management tools to promote grassroots innovation. At HCL we are driving an inverted organization structure and been acknowledged by Fortune magazine as World’s most modern management.

Diversity at HCL

“One major trend that would drive talent demand in the future — and should hence be driving talent development in the present is that IT has become “glocal” — it transcends geographic and demographic barriers to deliver this transformation.” - Vineet Nayar, Vice Chairman & CEO

HCL’s Inclusion & Diversity vision is to reinforce the Employee First philosophy by building an inclusive organization that fosters respect for individuals and celebrates the differences among all people. We value the experiences, knowledge and talents of all individuals in our company and communities we operate in. We support and promote non discriminatory practices for people to participate, contribute and develop equitably.

Our diversity approach focuses on enhancing workforce representation and sustaining an inclusive culture. While we work towards this mission, we constantly strive to connect with communities and help them leverage diversity.

Our work force representation includes people from different genders, cultures, ethnicities, work experiences, abilities etc. We focus on creating and sustaining a nurturing environment for employees with diverse backgrounds. Our Team leaders are equipped with skills to work across the globe in virtual teams. Affinity networks and Employee First Councils help us reach out to HCLites from diverse backgrounds. The networks ensure that diverse perspectives are included in all business operations. We also focus on creating support systems and policies that are based both on infrastructure and people, to facilitate work life continuity. Our programs include development conferences and social media for improving awareness for both HCL and the eco system in which we operate.

We are members of key global forums to promote inclusion and diversity. We harness the potential of employees and empower them as catalysts for social change. Our focused community interventions help employees reach out to rural areas, engage and enable people (specifically women and girl children), to lead a dignified life. The Campus Force team at HCL provides focused skill building interventions to nurture the less privileged students in India.

Over 50,000+ highly motivated individuals working for 500 satisfied customers around the globe. IT works better this way. HCL recognizes human resources as the backbone of its long-term success and has consciously focused on increasing the value-add per employee.

Its unique approach has made it an employer of choice both in India and abroad. Utmost importance is attached to attract the best talent into the organization, continuously train, improve the skill set of these professionals, and help them perform in the most challenging assignments, and finally retain our biggest asset-our people.

It’s about creating a new kind of corporation. It’s about empowering extra-ordinary individuals. It’s about you.

To experience value, you need people who are engaged, equipped and empowered. At HCL, we believe in Employee First. HCL’s enlightened approach to employee development focus on giving people whatever they need to succeed: be it a virtual assistant or talent transformation sabbaticals; expert guidance or fast track growth; inner peace or democratic empowerment. At HCL, what we have is Five Fold Path to Individual Enlightenment. This ensures they are given Support, Knowledge, Recognition, Empowerment, and Transformation.

Communication with our Employees

At HCL, we value open communication and believe that it is the foundation for establishing a culture of trust and transparency. We have mechanisms through which our senior management can communicate in a complete, unambiguous, and timely manner with the employees. We also have forums that provides our employees an opportunity to express their opinion and issues on various aspects ranging from their area of responsibility to the overall work environment. Few of such key communication initiatives are discussed below:

Directions:

This is a unique face to face communication initiative by HCL’s senior leadership covering all employees across the globe every year. The objective is to share HCL’s achievement in the previous year and the business goals and vision for the year ahead.

U&I Conversations:

This is an ongoing two-way dialog mechanism between the CEO and the employees which provides them an opportunity to ask questions and obtain answers. The employees can ask wide array of questions ranging from HCL Strategy to their individual issues. This also includes reverse blogging where the CEO posts questions to the employees through U&I conversations.

Opinion Poll:

We value hearing from employees and taking appropriate actions where needed. We seek feedback from employees through opinion polls that are conducted on a fortnightly to monthly basis on a wide array of issues ranging from policies to business. The results are displayed on the company site and relevant inputs and actions are drawn based on the same.

Employee First Councils and EFGC:

Employee First Councils is a unique platform of the HCLites, for the HCLites and by the HCLites. It’s a truly democratic setup where employees can nominate themselves to work for a council or elect their representatives and participate in the organizational decisions that impact their daily life. Along with this we have Employee First Governance Council (EFGC) which offers a platform for employees to voice their opinions on employee issues by taking part in the opinion polls; giving feedback on policies and programs, etc.
